What is custom kitting?
Custom kitting is the process of designing and assembling individual components, tubes, swabs, containers, labels, instructions, and packaging, into a single, ready-to-use kit built to a customer's exact specification. Instead of a lab ordering a dozen separate items and assembling collection packs by hand, a kitting partner sources every component, assembles it under quality control, and delivers a finished kit that is ready to use the moment it is opened.
In diagnostics and life sciences, that finished kit is usually a specimen collection kit: everything a patient, phlebotomist, or site needs to collect a sample and get it back to the lab intact. The custom part matters because no two testing workflows are identical. Tubes, volumes, additives, labeling, branding, and shipping configuration all change with the test, the sample type, and the end user.
What is kitting and fulfillment?
Kitting and fulfillment combines two functions that are often split across vendors: building the kits (kitting) and storing, picking, packing, and shipping them on demand (fulfillment). Under one roof, a kit can be assembled in controlled batches, held in inventory, and then shipped, individually to a patient's home or in bulk to a collection site, the same day an order comes in.
Keeping the two together is what turns a pile of components into an operational supply chain. When a lab's volume spikes, or a direct-to-consumer brand runs a promotion, the fulfillment layer absorbs it without the customer touching a box.

Why labs and brands outsource kitting
Building kits in-house looks cheaper than it is. It ties up staff, floor space, and purchasing bandwidth, and puts sample quality in the hands of a manual process.
Consistency & error reduction
Most laboratory errors are made before a sample reaches an instrument. A kit assembled to a validated standard, with the correct tube, additive, label, and packaging every time, designs those pre-analytical errors out before collection.
Scale without the overhead
Build 100 kits or 100,000 with the same consistency, and flex through demand spikes without hiring, training, or leasing warehouse space.
Compliance built in
Specimen and device kits sit inside real regulatory frameworks. A dedicated kitting company runs the quality system, packaging validation, and traceability rather than bolting them on.
Cost & inventory control
Consolidated component sourcing, managed inventory, and less waste from expired or mis-assembled stock usually beat the fully loaded cost of in-house assembly.
One vendor, not five
When the same partner handles kitting, fulfillment, transport, and integration, there is one accountable point of contact instead of a chain of vendors pointing at each other.
Faster turnaround
Kits held in temperature-controlled inventory ship the same day an order arrives, individually to a physician's office, patient's home or in bulk to a collection site.
The strongest argument for custom kitting design and manufacturing is data quality. One landmark study found that 61.9% of laboratory errors occur in the pre-analytical phase, the collection, handling, and transport stage a kit directly controls, so a kit built to a validated standard designs those errors out before a sample is ever taken.

Built on a Foundation of Quality
Kitting quality is only as good as the system behind it. Every kit that leaves our facility meets the highest standards of quality and regulatory compliance, so your specimens are collected, packaged, and transported correctly every time. Kits that ship diagnostic specimens are packaged as Biological Substance, Category B (UN3373) under Packing Instruction 650, with compliant triple packaging designed in, not added at the shipping dock (see our UN3373 packaging guide).

Custom kitting questions
What is custom kitting?
Custom kitting is the process of designing and assembling separate components, such as tubes, swabs, containers, labels, and instructions, into a single ready-to-use kit built to a customer's specification. In diagnostics, the finished kit is usually a specimen collection kit that contains everything needed to collect a sample and return it to the lab.
What is the difference between kitting and fulfillment?
Kitting is building the kits; fulfillment is storing, picking, packing, and shipping them on demand. Kitting and fulfillment together means one partner assembles the kits, holds them in inventory, and ships them, individually to patients or in bulk to sites, without the customer handling the logistics.
What types of kits does DS2 build?
Diagnostic and lab kits, specimen collection kits (blood, urine, saliva, swab, and specialty types, including at-home kits), medical device kits, and clinical trial kits. Kits can be standard or fully customized, in volumes from 100 to 100,000 and beyond.
Why should a lab outsource kitting instead of building kits in-house?
Outsourcing improves consistency and reduces pre-analytical errors, scales without adding staff or space, builds compliance and traceability into the process, controls component and inventory cost, and consolidates kitting, fulfillment, and transport under one accountable vendor.
Is DS2's kitting facility certified?
Yes. DS2's kitting is produced in an FDA-registered, ISO 13485:2016-certified, temperature-controlled facility, with cGMP-ready assembly, DOT and IATA dangerous-goods certification, 100% barcode-verified assembly, and full lot traceability.
Can DS2 handle both small and large kit volumes?
Yes. The operation scales from small pilot runs to hundreds of thousands of kits, with same-day fulfillment available and inventory managed so demand spikes are absorbed without disruption.
